Research Interests:
Dr. Ewart's research is focused on the molecular mechanisms of allergic and airway diseases in animal models and humans. Her laboratory investigates the mechanisms underlying non-inflammatory as well as allergen-induced airway hyper responsiveness (AHR) in mice. In addition, her laboratory studies a whole population birth cohort from the Isle of Wight, UK that has been fully characterized for allergic diseases and indices at multiple time points through 10 years of age. This immense longitudinal dataset contains many children with rhinitis, eczema, and asthma. They are performing genetic association studies to identify genes that contribute to each allergic disease and combinations of allergies, by characterizing genetic polymorphisms throughout allergy candidate genes in these children. In addition to looking for susceptibility loci for asthma and other allergic outcomes they are also looking at gene-environment interactions. The goal is to identify both genetic and environmental risk factors for asthma and related allergies.
