Research Interests:
Dr. Hollingworth has expertise in pesticide toxicology, toxic mechanisms, neurotoxicology and resistance mechanisms to pesticides. His research interests focus on the mechanisms of action and metabolism of pesticides, both natural and man-made, with a particular focus on the underlying reasons for their selective toxicity and resistance. The importance of these processes in pesticide resistance and resistance management are a major topic of interest. Recent research has focused on the effects of newer pesticides on mitochondrial metabolism and bioenergetics, but neurotoxic effects continue to be of long-term interest and he has a keen interest in the area of pesticide regulation and risk assessment.

Fellow Award, Pesticide Chemistry Division, American Chemical Society (1981); Group Honor Award for Research Excellence, USDA (1996); Fellow, American Association for the Advancement of Science (2000); International Award for Research in Agrochemicals, American Chemical Society (2003). He is active in the American Association for the Advancement of Science; American Chemical Society-Divisional Membership in Agrochemicals and Agricultural Food and Chemistry; Entomological Society of America; Society for Risk Analysis; and Society of Toxicology-Biochemical Mechanisms and Neurotoxicology Specialty Sections. He is a past director of the National Food Safety and Toxicology Center at MSU and the MSU Pesticide Research Center.
